The "Minus the Action" project began when I was in college. One of my friends at school, Ryan Henriksen, was photographing high school sports for the town's local newspaper. I really had no interest in photographing sports, but I would go along with him to the football games for something to do. And I found myself not really photographing the game at all, but everything that was going on around it. There is so much enthusiasm and energy on Friday nights at high school football games, so I thought there was much more to document and photograph besides the game itself. I wanted to focus on the peripheries of high school football and try to paint a picture of what the atmosphere is like on Friday nights in southeast Ohio. And since then, that seems to be the way I approach most sports assignments.

Ho iniziato il progetto “Minus the Action” durante il college. Uno dei miei amici stava fotografando le attività sportive del suo liceo per un giornale locale. Non avevo mai nutrito un particolare interesse per lo sport, ma mi capitò di accompagnarlo alle partite di football. Vedendole, mi resi conto che ciò che era davvero interessante non erano le partite, ma tutto ciò che vi ruotava intorno: si respira così tanto entusiasmo ed energia durante una partita di football, che c'è molto altro da fotografare oltre le gare stesse. Ho focalizzato il mio interesse sullo sport di “periferia”, il football praticato nelle high school del Midwest, cercando di restituire nelle immagini l’atmosfera di un venerdì sera nel sud-est dell’Ohio.
