“The German photographer is back with a monumental work: Lebensmittel. Michael Schmidt has us accustomed to long-term projects that fall within the path of the great documentary photography. Yet his style is absolutely personal, innovative and, despite the extreme neatness, transgressive. In front of his camera the roles are often reversed: men turning into objects, objects turning into animated characters, becoming undoubtedly subjects. From 2006 to 2010, Schmidt crossed Europe photographing the production, the packaging and the presentation of food. Workers in the fields, farms, aquaculture establishments, bakeries, meat packaging industry: 177 images that serve as political and social mirror to an entire population. Any geographical reference is deliberately omette: the homogeneity is given by a painful realism, by a the feeling of oppression that emerges delayed, yet in a implacabile way. Just few images in colors underline Schmidt’s way of using the gray as color. Lebensmittel’s exhibition will be in Innsbruck (from June 16 at Taxispalais), in Berlin (Martin-Gropius-Bau, January 12 to April 1, 2013). “Il fotografo tedesco torna con un lavoro monumentale: Lebensmittel. Michael Schmidt da sempre ci ha abituato a progetti a lungo termine che s’inseriscono nel solco della grande fotografia documentaria con uno stile però, assolutamente personale, innovativo, e nonostante l’estrema pulizia, trasgressivo. Spesso davanti al suo obiettivo i ruoli si ribaltano: l’uomo si trasforma in oggetto, gli oggetti diventano protagonisti animati, soggetti indiscussi. Dal 2006 al 2010, Schmidt ha attraversato il continente europeo fotografando la produzione, la lavorazione, l’imballaggio e la presentazione dei prodotti alimentari. Lavoratori dei campi, fattorie, allevamenti ittici, panetterie, carni confezionate dall'industria alimentare: 177 immagini che fanno da specchio politico e sociale ad un’intera popolazione. I riferimenti locali sono volutamente omessi, l’omogeneità è data da uno sguardo doloroso e realistico, la sensazione di oppressione arriva in differita, ma è impietosa. Poche immagini a colori per un autore che sa usare ‘il grigio come colore’. Lebensmittel è anche una mostra che il prossimo 16 giugno sbarcherà a Innsbruck (Taxispalais), poi sarà la volta di Berlino (Martin-Gropius-Bau, 12 gennaio - 1 aprile 2013).  [Pamela Piscicelli]
